As the leader of the evil Decepticons, Megatron is easily one of the most iconic of the Transformers, and understandably one of the most collected. There has been at least one Megatron model in most Transformers runs, usually based off of a gun in older runs or a tank, attack helicopter, or other military vehicle in more recent years. It’s a strong indication of the Transformers appeal that even many adults don’t pause to consider the physical improbability of a 15-foot tall robot changing into a gun that is possibly 3 feet long.
Megatron can be one of the harder vintage Transformers models to get a hold of. The G1 Megatron was unlike most Transformers toys in several ways. First, he didn’t transform into a vehicle, like most of the Transformers lineup, but a toy gun. As a result, the toy didn’t follow the standard “single unit” model as most Transformers, and was instead composed of a 20ber of smaller pieces that were detached and reattached in various places to make the transition from robot to gun. Naturally, these little pieces were prone to getting lost, so a lot of incomplete models are floating around. Replacement pieces can often be found on eBay, assuming you know what parts you’re missing.
Due to more recent gun laws, toy guns in the United States need to be fitted with a bright orange cap at the end of the barrel. Most used Megatron toys should come with a cap already equipped, but if you have an old one or get one new in box and find it uncapped, make sure to get it capped.
