Always one of the most popular Transformers, the Autobot Bumblebee has been featured in a 20ber of franchises, including the original G1 franchise, the recent CG-heavy movies, and the also-recent Animated cartoon series. He tends to be one of the closest Autobots to whatever humans are helping them, possibly because a 10-foot tall robot a little easier to identify with than a 20-foot tall robot. He transforms into a vehicle that highly resembles (but for legal reasons definitely isn’t) a Volkswagen Beetle, which definitely cements his position as a “cute” character.
Most Bumblebee versions are younger, smaller, and weaker than the other Autobots, leading him to do brave and/or foolish things to both prove his worth and advance the plot. Despite this unfortunate tendency, Bumblebee does tend to be highly competent in a pinch.
Though many Transformers were designed with marketing to children in mind, Bumblebee was one of those most designed as a kid-appeal character. This has usually proved quite successful, making Bumblebee characters and merchandise some of the most popular Transformers collectibles.
