Since there are no newly produced westerns on television schedules, it is sometimes hard to remember that at one point they were a dominant genre. Shows like Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Have Gun Will Travel, Rawhide, and The Lone Ranger were hugely popular. There were also the singing cowboy shows that featured Gene Autry and my personal favorite Roy Rogers.
Roy Rogers was called The King of the Cowboys and many children absolutely loved everything about his show. He had that gorgeous Palomino horse named Trigger, a funny sidekick that drove a jeep named Nellybelle, Bullet the German Shepherd and of course his wife, Dale Evans. Many of the children who watched the Roy Rogers show wanted all of the Roy Rogers’ toys and merchandise, and at the top of the list for many of those children was the Roy Rogers cap gun. Those were simpler times and a kid could covet a Roy Rogers cap gun that looked like a replica of the shooting irons his/her idol carried on the TV screen.
