The Hess Company began manufacturing their toy trucks as a way to thank all of their loyal customers. These toy trucks were put on the marked every year, right before Christmas. This all began in 1964. Customers were presented with replicas of the Hess Oil company’s fleet of trucks, at very affordable prices. The head of the Hess Oil company wanted to be sure that the truck replicas could be afforded by all. To this day the trucks are released to the public at local gas stations right before Thanksgiving and are in such demand that there is a limit of only two per customer.

As the company changed, so did the colors of the Hess Toy Trucks. They went from green with yellow trim to green and white with the merger of Amerada Hess Corporation. Then in 1987, the company changed the colors back to white and green while remodeling their service stations. The different aspects of the company have also been reflected in the toys’ creation. Tankers, fire trucks, the training van, and even a race car carrier have all been distributed to employees, customers, and the public for one reason or another.
The quality has never wavered and the toys’ specs are always changing to excite both children and collectors. The first truck in the line allowed the toy to be filled with water which would spray through the attached delivery hose. The lights in the front and the back were able to be turned off and on with a switch. The other details in following models were split windows, sliding doors, display platforms, and motors for rotating lights and sounds. Many models have removable chrome pieces.
The 1990 Hess Toy Tanker Truck is the first to glow in the series. It has a record 34 red, yellow, and white lights all over the truck. There are several logos that also shine in the darkness. The truck creates noise through the horn and it backs up with the flick of a switch underneath the cab. And because the company never skips on detailing, there are chrome wheels, bumpers, and gas tanks. There are a few removable parts for children to play with like the chrome ladder.
The are many reasons why the 1990 Hess Toy Tanker Truck that glows in dark is popular. It is carrying on a long-lived tradition of being a superior quality toy truck. Because the Hess Toy Trucks are available during the holiday season, this 1990 Hess Toy Tanker Truck that glows in the dark comes in a box that depicts a beautiful vision of a snowy station being serviced.
