Old Betsy sounds like a reference to an old car, but it is referring to Davy Crockett’s gun. Since the debut of the television show, toy gun replicas of famous guns have been popular with children. Cap guns were popular at the time of the Davy Crockett Show. Today, they are sought after by many of the very same children who watched the Davy Crockett Show, and who have become collectors of toys they remember from their childhoods.
The collecting is not limited to only the guns; records containing the television song, Bang Goes Old Betsy (also just called Old Betsy) are sought after, too. The show had kids wanting all of the favorite item: guns, records, canteens, knives, costumes, figures and everything else. However, the favored items had to be the raccoon skin hat and the Davy Crockett gun.
