In the late 1950s, girls who wanted to play dress-up with their dolls were limited to two-dimensional paper dolls. Barbie’s creator Ruth Handler decided that her daughter (Barbara) deserved more than these flimsy paper dolls. Since Handler’s husband was co-founder of the Mattel Toy Company, the creation of the first Barbie was more than just a dream.
Barbie was actually created so that girls could dress them up and role-play with them, using Barbie’s different clothes fashions. Presently, vintage Barbie doll clothing is high on collectors’ lists.
