Since Barbie was created so that girls could role-play and change Barbie’s fashions, it seems only right that Barbie has a lot of different “looks.” Mattel has long maintained that Barbie should help little girls dream about all of the endless possibilities they can achieve.
Barbie’s careers are reflections of what is occurring in society at the current times. And, of course, Barbie’s clothes are tailored to meet her career choices! As women achieved the right to hold more and more non-traditional jobs, so did Barbie. The changing times determined Barbie’s career paths. In the 1960s, she held more “traditionally female” jobs: fashion model, ballerina, babysitter.
Barbie has been a student teacher as well as a teacher. She has taught art, Spanish, elementary school, sign language, even swimming and aerobics. Barbie has been an officer in all of the major military branches: Air Force, Army, Navy, even the Marine Corps! Barbie has held political offices. She’s not only been a presidential candidate, but has actually won the post of president! Some of Barbie’s unique jobs have included: astronaut, Canadian Mountie, NASCAR driver, ambassador, even a Starfleet officer!
